How to Give Feedback Without Sounding Harsh
In text, feedback can easily read like judgment. A small structural change makes it feel collaborative.
What makes feedback feel aggressive
- Absolute statements (“This makes no sense.”)
- “Why did you…” (feels personal)
- No alternative or next step
A safer template: observation → impact → suggestion
- Observation: “In the doc, A is currently stated as …”
- Impact: “This might cause confusion in B because …”
- Suggestion: “Would it help to rephrase it as …?”
Example
Too harsh: “This is wrong.”
Better: “I think this could be read as A, which might cause confusion in B. Would rephrasing it to C work?”
